2800 Concert Band
Credits: 20
Prerequisites: No Experience Needed
Meets requirement(s): Fine & Applied Arts
Open to Grades: 9, 10, 11 & 12
At FRHS: The Concert Band course (Concert Band) is comprised of woodwind, brass, and percussion students with the ability to perform level IV/V music. Incoming freshman students who wish to participate in high school band, but do not want to audition, will enroll in the “2800 Concert Band” course. Students who are new to band may need supplementary instruction via private lessons on their instrument to get caught up to the high school proficiency level. Concert Band students will study music theory, history, composition, and will perform wind band literature of high artistic merit. Students are required to attend all scheduled events that occur outside of the regular school day, including but not limited to rehearsals, concerts, pep band events, and other performances. Band is a year-long commitment at FRHS and students are required to enroll in a band class during both Fall and Spring semesters each school year. Concert Band will focus primarily on marching band-related skills during Quarter 1, and it is highly encouraged for students to also participate in the extracurricular FRHS Marching Band. Concert Band students are highly encouraged to take private lessons on their instrument.
2805 Symphonic Band

The Instrumental Fundamentals Class is designed to teach fundamental skills to woodwind, brass, and percussion players. Tone technical facility music terminology and music reading are stressed. Literature appropriate to beginner skill level is presented. Performance opportunities begin. At FRHS: The Symphonic Band course (called Symphonic Band) is comprised of woodwind and percussion students with the ability to perform level V/VI music. Membership is by audition only - students who are placed into Symphonic Band and play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument should enroll in the “2805 Symphonic Band” course. Wind Ensemble is comprised of the most advanced wind and percussion students. The Wind Symphony will perform wind band literature of the highest quality, and will include the study of music theory, history, and composition. Participation in the Wind Symphony carries with it the responsibility of attendance at ALL scheduled rehearsals and performances and will involve time outside of the regular school day. At FRHS: The Wind Ensemble course (called FRHS Wind Symphony I) is comprised of woodwind and brass students with the ability to perform level VI+ music. At FRHS: The Percussion Ensemble course (called Percussion Ensemble) is comprised of percussion students with the ability to perform level VI+ music. Small Instrumental is available to students who wish to study and perform music in small ensembles.
At FRHS: This course is available to students wishing to develop their color guard skill sets in a small ensemble. Color Guard is now one of the most popular activities for students in the high school curriculum. This outstanding performing group works in tandem with the band program. Color Guard students will learn performance techniques, choreography, costuming and makeup, safety practices (warm up and cool down), music terminology, note values, rhythms, meter, tempo, melodic content and contrast, and music listening. Students who elect to participate in the FRHS Marching Band may enroll in this course for the first quarter. Students are required to attend all scheduled events that occur outside of the regular school day, including but not limited to rehearsals, competitions, and other performances.
2830 Select Stage Band (Jazz Ensemble 1)

The student must be a member of a concert band or show proficiency on the piano, guitar or other appropriate stage band instrument. At FRHS: The Select Stage Band course (called Jazz Ensemble I) is comprised of woodwind, brass, and percussion students with the ability to perform advanced jazz literature. Membership is by audition only, and students must either be a member of a concert band, or show proficiency on the piano, guitar, or bass with director approval. Jazz Ensemble I students will be exposed to a variety of styles of music, as well as jazz improvisation and theory. Students are required to attend all scheduled events that occur outside of the regular school day, including but not limited to rehearsals, concerts, and other performances. Select Stage Band will meet at a regularly scheduled time outside of the normal school day during the Fall and Spring semesters, and will not take up an additional slot in the student’s course load. Students who expect to be placed into Select Stage Band should enroll in this course.

The student must be a member of a concert band or show proficiency on piano and guitar. At FRHS: The Stage Band course (called Jazz Ensemble II) is comprised of woodwind, brass, and percussion students with the ability to perform a variety of jazz literature. Membership is by audition only, and students must either be a member of a concert band, or show proficiency on the piano, guitar, or bass with director approval. Jazz Ensemble II students will be exposed to a variety of styles of music, as well as jazz improvisation and theory. Students are required to attend all scheduled events that occur outside of the regular school day, including but not limited to rehearsals, concerts, and other performances. Stage Band will meet at a regularly scheduled time outside of the normal school day during the Fall and Spring semesters, and will not take up an additional slot in the student’s course load. Marching Band is THE LARGEST ATHLETIC TEAM ON CAMPUS!
The Fossil Ridge Marching Band is comprised of all students who wish to participate in the award-winning, competitive marching band program at FRHS. Membership is open to all FRHS students, including those who play a traditional band instrument, those wishing to learn a marching band instrument, and those who plan to participate in the color guard program (flags, rifles, dance). In order to participate in Marching Band, students must either be concurrently enrolled in a concert band class, or have director approval.
The Marching Band performs at various school and community events, football games, and band competitions throughout the fall semester. Students are required to attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances. This is a co-curricular course that happens outside of the school day, including, but not limited to, band camp prior to the beginning of the school year, outside-of-school rehearsals, and evening/Saturday performances throughout the fall semester. There are activity fees associated with participation in marching band.
